Back to School Time and Autism

Back to school time presents a big transition for all students.  Children on the autism spectrum tend to have a more difficult time with transitions.  Taking the time to prepare your child for the upcoming transition is important.  This post will focus on some resources to help you make this process go as smoothly as possible for you, the teachers and most importantly your child.

Back to School Transition Time - This article, posted on the Suite101 website, details one mother’s attempts to make the transition easier on her child.

Back to School Autism Conferences – This coming weekend, August 9th and 10th, the Pasadena Convention Center will be hosting a Back to School Autism Conference.  On September 26th and 27th, Arizona State University’s West Campus will also be hosting this seminar.  Carol Gray, the creator of Social Stories, is expected to be presenting at both of these conferences.

Taking Autism to School – This book is great for your child and his peers.  It explains autism to classmates as well as helps the child with autism understand his differences.

  1. Just wanted to thank you for all this invaluable information.

  2. Peace By Piece seems driven more by greed than actually helping these disabled children. Sure they offer some services and do help to a point, however, they aslo charge extra fees from parents as well as offer services that are never actually given. The curriculum is also not based on much and the children are often outside in the heat most of the day. There facility is also usually not very clean… One reason my son left the school was due to being in an unsafe/unclean environment… not to mention some suspicion of fraudulent acts…
